Baby talk

For some reason my child, who has talked in complete sentences since he was a year old, has decided to revert back to baby talk lately. It's been the last month or so, and I'm sure it has something to do with Lucy coming, but Nate and I are out of ideas on what to do. We tell him we won't respond unless he uses big boy words, I spent at least thirty minutes one day talking in nothing but baby talk to him so he would know how pointless it is, among other things...

Today Nate thought he'd quiz him down. "Little Man, where did you hear that word you're saying? Where did it come from?"

Milo, always logical, simply responded, "From my mouth, Daddy."

What a weekend

Things that should never happen to a woman who is 9 months pregnant:

1. Indecent exposure of any kind (I'm thinking the dress tucked into the undergarments is the worst)
2. Being forced to run, for any reason
3. Stomach flu

Guess which of these happened to me this weekend? Thankfully not all of them, that's for sure. But Hurricane Stomach Flu definitely swept through our house, and I spent all of Saturday in the bathroom in one way or another. I puked until I had broken blood vessels in my face AND stomach and felt like I had pulled all the muscles up both sides of my torso. Poor Milo threw up for the first (and second and third) time. Poor Nate had to take care of both of us and move his Mom into her new apartment. It's been one of those weekends that I wasn't quite sure any of us would survive, and I'm just starting to be able to hold down food again. Wow.

The good news is that the chair rail is actually up in Lucy's room, and Ann and my Mom spent hours yesterday painting all the trim white. Woo-hoo! Now I can get to work on all my little nesting and re-finishing projects, and hopefully Lucy can hold off on getting here until it's all ready to go. We're really pushing it to the last minute this time. Milo's room was ready for literally months before he even came!

This and that

So I learned a valuable lesson today - apparently I don't wear my son out enough. Sure, educational play, reading, crafts, etc. are wonderful and mind-building. But nothing beats a two-hour romp through the local park and splash area to perpetuate a 3-hour nap. I'll take it. We're about to start running laps in the backyard more often.

I finished Lucy's quilt! I don't know if you can tell from the pictures, but I backed it with minky fabric, which I also overlapped onto the front. I also tied it down with plum embroidery floss to make it extra stable (and cute - I love the look). Nate's working on trim and chair rail this weekend (hopefully), and her room just might be finished before she gets here. Fingers crossed! I have to get busy on my other projects, including making a fabric scrap swag for the window and making slipcovers for Milo's blue glider. No more procrastinating, that's for sure, because when all that is done, I'll have just enough time to steam the carpet, wash her clothes, and set the room up. WHEW! Four weeks from yesterday to due date!

And now here's a gratuitous photo of the cutest child alive. He's really interested in wrapping up in his straw glasses, but not so much in drinking through them. Thumbs up!

Progress

I bought a gallon of milk today with the expiration date June 1. Do you realize what that means? We're close enough to June, the month that Lucy comes, that my milk will only last that long (if it even makes it that long since I've been chugging it straight from the carton these days). WOW, it's so much closer than it's seemed, well, since I found out I was pregnant. This one has draaaaagged on, but it's coming to a close. Good thing we're continually making progress on the room! Nate did purple flowers last night, and even those these photos are begging to be re-taken in daylight, I had to share them anyway.

The flowers will make the perfect frame for the yarn letters we did months ago. Can't wait to get those up on the wall!
Milo has been a little bundle of adorable energy lately, although he's always such a gem, too. We had a bit of a scare this week and I spent a day on virtual bed rest, and Milo has just been sweet and agreeable through it all. He actually got to spend most of the day playing with Nana, and he couldn't have been more delighted.

Today I pulled out my thank-you cards to write a note, and he asked me for one, too. I obliged him, and even got him a pen, and he spent a lot of time seriously concentrating on drawing on every single part of it. I asked him who it was for, and he told me, "It's for Daddy." So we marched into our room to put it on his pillow, and as he climbed up onto the bed, I asked him what it said. The answer was so completely heartwarming: "Daddy, I love you soooo much. Don't go to work any more."

I also let him get a $1 Matchbox car at Target today, because he was so good and walked right by me through the whole store. As we were walking to the check-out with his pick, he told me, "Mommy, this the coolest car I ever opened." So easy to please, and such a precious little nugget. Hopefully things go just as well when Lucy is born!

Quick Update

Quick update - the gray is on the bottom of the walls in Lucy's room! Now Nate is going to paint purple flowers over the top of some of the stripes, distress the trim, and add a chair rail. Yippee! Things are coming together, and thank goodness. After all, our little lady is just about 5 weeks out now (well, from the due date...)

We had an awesome Mother's Day! Nate and Milo spoiled me rotten and took me to Kingwood for lunch and a bit of walking/shopping/hanging out. Any time that I get to spend with the two of them is extra-treasured these days, because Nate is still so busy at work. We had so much fun and I got some priceless photos!

Tomorrow? I'll show you the photo booth pictures Nate and Milo gave me for Mother's Day. So fantastic. Happy Monday!

Project Central

I'm a happy camper for two (main) reasons. Number one, Lucy's room is coming along. Nate took the tape down so you can really see what some yellow stripes will look like. Gray is going up on the bottom this weekend.
The stripes are mustard, although they look a little orangey in these pictures.

Gray going up on the bottom, and then a chair rail to separate the two.

Number two, I've been working on a little project... A quilt for Lucy! I'm in the home stretch - all I need now is the minky (I feel uncomfortable saying this word) fabric for the backing, which will also form a purple border around the very edge on the front. What do you think? It (obviously) has its imperfections, as the only other quilt I've ever made was for my textiles class in college, but I'm pretty pleased with the results. Really, could you go wrong with these adorable fabrics no matter what?

Fabric close-up

Just another fun angle.
In other news, I thought Milo was asleep today for his nap, so I sat down to have a few Cool Ranch Doritos (which I normally don't love, but I have been wanting them all week). Well, lo and behold, my child had been lying in his bed for an hour and was still not asleep, and he took the opportunity to start shouting and talking. I marched myself in there to give him a spanking (because this is week 2 of the no-napping business), picked him up, and he gave me the most withering look. "Mommy, your breath smells like onions."

Oh the drama. I couldn't even spank him because I was too busy laughing. So, instead, I rocked my 2 1/2 year old to sleep for naptime. Good grief. Thank goodness it's Friday!

Baby Shower Photos!

Here are just a few I wanted to share. I'm sure more will follow as I get them in. And I spared you the pain of seeing the litany of photos of me opening gifts, a different crazy look on my face in each and every one.

My fabulous (and exquisitely delicious) cake, made with love by Gary and Amanda.

Best snack spread of all times and amazing collage in the background (made by Emily).

Ann got her craft on and made a diaper cake!

Look at my hot mom!

Again, my fabulous hostesses who love me so much and make sure I know it all the time.

Happiness is...

Things making me happy today...

From tape...

... to yellow stripes in the nursery!

Milo's new look

The two of us snuggling on the couch.

Ann's craftiness for my shower - the cutest diaper cake!!!
And aside from all these things, here's what I didn't get a picture of - fun times walking to the park with Sar and the kids, meeting Emily, Lilypaul, and Delaney there, snack time at my house with leftovers from the shower, and a big fat nap after a week without one. Mondays are never this good!

Baby shower!

I have so much to tell you, maybe because it's the middle of the night? I always get a little chatty when I can't sleep, and tonight is no exception. But I think I might be all worked up because I had the most amazing baby shower ever today. Well, besides my baby showers with Milo, which were also the most amazing baby showers ever. I'm telling you, if this keeps up, I'm going to get a little too spoiled and then I can't be responsible for my own actions (just kidding).

If you know me, you know that a few words of affirmation are all I really need. A few of us could have gotten together with a pizza and some sodas and just hung out for a little while and I would have been as pleased as anything. Instead, so many people that I love got together for an amazing "I Love Lucy"-themed shower, complete with my adorable hostesses dressing straight out of the 50's. They were polka-dotty and fabulous, and the entire house was decorated in black, white, and red. They made me a spread of (all vegetarian) food, and everyone showered Lucy with gifts. I am still buzzing from the excitement and the fun and all the people who love me and love Lucy already, even though she isn't even here yet. WOW. She'll be here in 6 1/2 weeks (give or take a bit, and I'm hoping she's early...), and everything is so surreal. My heart is so very full tonight that all I can do is spend my insomnia on heartfelt thank-you cards.

I wish I had thought to take my camera, but pictures will be coming. Until then, I just have to show you what Milo thinks about it all (well, about everything these days). Thumbs up!

Long hours and sad faces

Milo and I were sitting at the table this morning eating breakfast, when all of a sudden I could tell he was deep in thought. He stuck his bottom lip out and said quietly, "I miss my friend."

My heart wrenched and I immediately asked him, "Milo, what friend do you miss?"

He said it again, "I miss my friend." And then he drove it home. "I miss Daddy."

The sweetest boy alive misses his daddy, who's been working some long hours.
