The Alamo

So we saw a number of cool things in San Antonio, one of them being the Alamo. Nate has lectured me on the Alamo ever since we got married, telling me that Texas was the only state that was its own nation, reminding me that Texas can fly its state flag as high as the country's flag, etc. etc. etc. We've always had the North vs. South, Illinois vs. Texas stand-off, and I've been skeptical. But I have to admit, visiting the Alamo was a little humbling, seeing where people who believed in freedom so much that they were willing to die for it made their last stand. At one point I saw an older woman chowing on an ice cream bar and I wanted to smack it out of her hand and shout, "Have some respect!" Okay, maybe I'm becoming a little Texas-proud?

Goal on Hold

Ever have one of those moments that kind of stops you in your tracks?
Milo was sick last week. And I mean high fever, constantly cranky, freaked me out kind of sick. Then again, he's never even run a fever before, so it was extra startling...
I found myself praying over him constantly and trying to figure out how this had happened. Had I exposed him to something I shouldn't have? Was he eating something he shouldn't? Was he just plain exhausted?
And then it hit me. Oh man, it hit me hard. Milo hasn't been resting for a while now. And then again, neither have I. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I could almost tell you exactly when he'd stopped resting very well... It was exactly the time I started getting less sleep myself. That's right. Marathon training.
I wanted to say it wasn't true, but I realized that I've been pushing myself harder and harder all the time lately, and the more I pushed, the less he slept. The less we both slept, come to think of it. I didn't want to admit all of this, though, because I'm good at running. And some days, it felt like running was the only thing I was good at. Blech.
Anyway, all this to say, with a month left of training, it's not worth it anymore. It's weird to stop training for something other than an injury, but I've got to do what's best for my little man. So as of last week, after a lot of crying and mourning, I put my goal on hold. It's all for the best.
Someday I'm going to run a marathon.
It's just that my someday won't be this December 4th.

Creepers

Ann's roommate Tia and some of her classmates made this video, and it totally cracked me up. Just thought I'd share!

Remember me?

Were you wondering if I'd disappeared?
Well, a lot has happened since I last wrote. Milo was sick, which shut my whole world down (more on that later).
And then we went on vacation to San Antonio. Woo-hoo! Nate's been promising me a trip to San Antonio since we got married, and we finally did it 6 1/2 years later.
Just a sneak peek of all the fun...

Whether the weather

Oh yes, he's about to climb up on something... anything...

Seriously, could he be any cuter?

The two handsomest men on the planet

Boy, are we loving this puffy vest around our house now that the weather has dropped down into the 60's here in Texas. Oh yeah, we're practically freezing (insert sarcasm). But I figure that I need to take every opportunity for this cute little thing, never mind that it's huge on Milo. Who knows how long we'll have weather like this, or whether it will ever happen again? (Okay, so I might be slightly exaggerating, but it feels that way.)
Besides, a puffy vest seems to add a level of protection to my little adventurer, who has now decided to start going head-first down the tiny slide we have in our house. If I could just get a large puffy hat to match, I'd be able to breathe a lot easier...

Treasure

Okay,  time to make up for yesterday's whining...

Because even though Milo has been having a hard time with sleep, he's such a wonderful little guy.
For example, the other day I decided to let him share a taste of my pumpkin scone (we've been introducing little bits of table food). Well, he loved that pumpkin scone so much that he was literally climbing up me to get to it, desperate for another bite. In fact, he tried to reach into my mouth at one point to get the bite I had just put in there. I loved having someone to enjoy a scone with me because Nate doesn't care for them.

And then there was this morning. I was sitting in Milo's room breastfeeding him a few minutes before 7 because he had woken up crying. I knew he needed to go back to sleep, and I actually thought he was nodding off. Nate stopped by the room to wave at me on his way to work, and I signed I love you and waved a little. I looked down and Milo was still nursing, eyes closed, waving back at me.

He shared my breakfast oatmeal this morning, too, after he had already eaten all of his baby oatmeal. And as I sit here and type, he is taking everything out of the computer cabinet underneath me, waving each piece of paper and software disc with delight. Which makes me think I should probably wrap this up pretty quickly...

Being a mommy is always a treasure, whether we've slept or not. Remind me that every now and then, okay?

TIRED

Tired tired tired tired tired.
Did I mention I'm tired?
There's been a lot going on, and I've spent a lot of sleepless nights just thinking. Ugh. It reminds me of the old days before I a.) started running in the wee hours and b. )became a mommy. I used to have the same problem all the time, and I'll admit, I took lying down and going right to sleep for granted!

I thought I'd catch a nap while Milo did, but every time I even think about it, it seems to make him decide that he shouldn't nap at all. Which is what he's doing right now. He's standing in his bed screaming instead of resting, and blogging is the only way I can keep myself from running in there and picking him straight up. I hate to hear him cry, and he's been doing a lot of it at naptime and bedtime... Which makes my blood pressure skyrocket and my stomach lurch. In fact, as I so pathetically just told Nate, I'm sitting here blogging and crying. It pretty much sucks.

Did I mention I'm really really tired and probably slightly irrational? Don't feel too bad for me. Sunshine is on the horizon.
